POSTER 2024. SORTLIST SELECTION

About the project

The defense of Mariupol against the Russian invasion lasted 86 days in complete encirclement. This is the story of the heroism of the garrison, told by them themselves – more than a hundred servicemen, soldiers and officers were interviewed. Based on their testimony, we show how the defense of Mariupol became a feat that saved the South of Ukraine: Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa.

The defense lasted from the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, February 24, 2022. Being under complete siege, Mariupol was defended by a garrison of 7,000 soldiers. On May 20, by order of the higher command, they laid down their weapons and left. many of them are still in captivity. Their stories need telling.

These are stories of courage, resilience, tragedy, loyalty, betrayal, cruelty and mercy on a scale the world has not seen in eighty years. The chronicle of the defense of Mariupol must be studied and remembered. Thousands of civilians and defenders were killed by the Russians. This is the bloodiest siege in Europe since World War II.

The project is being created by Mariupol Reborn, a public organization for the revival of Mariupol after de-occupation, which is already working on the restoration of the Ukrainian city. The partner of the project is Big City Lab – an urban bureau that helped Mariupol to recover after the first invasion, and is currently helping to develop a vision for the future of Mariupol.

Topics we want to raise:
— Ukrainian Thermopylae: Mariupol saved Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odessa
— Heroic deeds of military personnel of the city garrison
— When did we realize that this is an example of a great achievement?
— The values of the defense of Mariupol: courage, stability, patience, faith
— How the defense of Mariupol affected all of Ukraine and Ukrainians
